About the merSETA

The merSETA is one of the 21 Sector Education and Training Authorities (SETAs).

Established to promote skills development in terms of the Skills Development Act of 1998 (as amended).​

The 21 SETAs broadly reflect different sectors of the South African economy. The merSETA encompasses Manufacturing, Engineering and Related Services.

Grants​

We offer a range of grants that support skills development and ensure quality learning programs.

Discretionary Grant

A grant made to support companies, training programmes in accordance with legislation, Skills Development Levies Act no 9 of 1999 & funding regulations. It contributes towards the achievement of the objectives of the Human Resource Development Strategy, the National Skill Development Strategy, the National Skills Accord, & Sector Skills Plan (SSP). Employers are encouraged to train their employees and unemployed people on credit-bearing learning…

Discretionary & Mandatory Grant Criteria

The employer should be registered with the merSETA and their levy contribution should be with SETA 17. Employers are encouraged to engage with SARS if they are unsure of the SETA they should pay levies to.
Employers need to ensure that their SDF is registered on the NSDMS system and that the respective company is linked to the SDF profile.
Bank details need to be submitted and approved for the system to initiate the mandatory grant application.

Application Process

The merSETA periodically opens dedicated funding windows for Discretionary Grant and Mandatory Grant applications. Calls for Discretionary Grant applications are issued through an official notice published on public platforms, including national newspapers, the merSETA website (www.merseta.org.za), and the merSETA social media channels. Each funding notice outlines the application requirements, submission process, and timelines to be followed.
